Classical Mechanics Flashcards

Classical Mechanics Flashcards

Intuition

Flashcards for muscle memory: Flashcards are like drilling scales on a musical instrument, they build the automatic recall that frees your mind for higher-level thinking during exams and problem-solving.

Why it matters: In physics, knowing definitions and formulas instantly lets you focus on setting up and solving problems rather than searching your memory for basic facts.

The key insight: Spaced repetition is the most efficient way to memorise, reviewing cards just before you forget them maximises retention while minimising study time.

About This Deck

Flashcards covering fundamental concepts in classical mechanics, including Newton’s laws, kinematics, energy, and momentum.

  4. Export your progress to backup regularly

Common Mistakes

Confusing Newton’s third law pairs with action-reaction in different frames: Third law pairs act on different bodies simultaneously. They are not “equal and opposite” in a non-inertial frame where fictitious forces appear.

Forgetting that work is a scalar, not a vector: Work W = F·d is the dot product, which can be negative. Sign errors in work lead to wrong kinetic energy changes via the work-energy theorem.

Mixing up rotational and translational kinetic energy: Translational: ½mv². Rotational: ½Iω². For rolling without slipping, both contribute. Using only one gives incomplete energy conservation.
